The government wants airlines to pay for your delays.

The Department of Transportation yesterday proposed a new rule that requires airlines to offer passengers cash compensation, rebook them for free on the next available flight, and cover meals, overnight lodging, and related transportation expenses when a disruption is caused by the airline.

The rule would follow similar laws in Canada, Brazil, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.

But will it fly in the United States? Should it fly in the United States?
