🤖 The frontier is already here — Silicon Valley spent last week arguing over whether to slow the race toward smarter machines. In travel, an algorithm already sets your airfare, and another one answers your complaint with a non-answer. You can read the full story today.

On Backchannel, John McDonald wants an airline to sell him the overhead bin above his seat. One airline already does.

For Members Only: Colorado’s attorney general says a financial services app collected more than $16 million from state residents while telling them on screen that the rate was zero. Plus, in our Forbes exclusive story, did you you your travel insurance has a money-back guarantee? I have the details over the wall. — Christopher Elliott

Pace the frontier? In travel, AI is already making our lives miserable
Air Canada’s chatbot told Jake Moffatt he could claim a bereavement discount after he flew, which wasn’t the airline’s policy, and the airline argued to a tribunal that the chatbot answered for itself. Algorithms already set your airfare and rank who gets the last seat out of a meltdown, and nothing requires anyone to tell you where you stand.

Luke Gilbertson’s Ring camera caught his Rover sitter shut into another room for 17 of the 24 hours she was booked, while his dog, Stewie, vomited and later needed care for a swallowed object. Rover denied the $5,272 claim as an illness of undetermined cause and sent him $276 for the sitting.

Frontier Airlines baggage fees: When the sizer says yes but the agent says no

A maintenance delay is the airline’s problem. That’s about to change.
A Transportation Department rule taking effect Oct. 19 moves 10 causes of delay and cancellation out of the airline’s column in federal reporting, and unscheduled maintenance is on the list. Europe answered the same question in 2008 and answered it the other way.

Help! My luggage doesn’t fit!

John McDonald says he’d stop caring about his boarding group if an airline would just sell him the overhead bin above his seat. Bin space, sold the way a seat assignment is sold, would take the scramble out of boarding. Does any airline offer it? The answer is on Backchannel. You can ask us a question on our new forum, too. Here’s how.
