My first visit to Germany was not long after the Berlin Wall came down. We went to Eisenach, which had been part of East Germany. General Motors had just started producing cars there. It built a new factory next to the old Wartburg factory, which had closed down, and now a shell. Our hosts drove us all over town and showed us the checkpoints staffed by Russian soldiers, as well as their barracks. They were still there, but friendly. I went back a few years later and it was all gone - checkpoints, barracks, old factory. If you didn’t remember them, you would not know they had been there.
