Auckland is just a big city, please, please, take the 45 minute ferry to Waiheke Island also, the ferry to Coromandel. Two beautiful ferry rides through the pretty harbour and small islands.
North Texas drivers are not friendly - at least when they get behind the wheel. They’re rude. They tailgate. They accelerate to fill the open spot when you’re trying to change lanes. Once out of their vehicles, they can be the nicest people in the world. I know I am. 🙄
Best meal - Impossible question. Chinese at Karen’s Unicorn in Edinburgh. Also every goulash I ate in rural Hungary. And untold numbers of amazing meals in Paris. And an amazing neighborhood Indian restaurant a few blocks from our office in Delhi.
Re great hiking - The Coast to Coast in England. Be sure to walk east to west! The Everest trek was great and the Inca trail, but that hike across England was the best.
As a Lord of the Rings fan I definitely want to visit "Middle Earth." Unfortunately every time a trip to New Zealand comes up I tend to send on of our RNs. I am a great fan of walking around whenever I am traveling so not sure if that counts as hiking. I think the livestreams are terrific! Perhaps I am a little biased.
Hiking anywhere in Yosemite, but especially the Vernal and Nevada Falls trail and the hike to the top of Yosemite Falls. Yosemite is a cathedral of spirituality and it always refreshes our bodies, minds and souls whenever we are there.
My favorite hike is very close to where you guys were (and you mentioned it) - the Banks Peninsula Track (https://www.bankstrack.co.nz/) out of Akaroa - a 3 day circuit. Not only is the scenery gorgeous (hiking up to the rim of the crater and down to the sea), you get the opportunity to kayak with penguins, and possibly Hector's Dolphins (the world's smallest). The accomodations along the track have penguin nests (some right outside the cottages) and are full of whimsy. One has outside bathtubs that you build a fire underneath for a nice hot tub soak. There are several options, including having your pack transported so you don't have to carry it. By far the most fun thing I have ever done in New Zealand.

I’m going in November! Can’t wait!
I’ve been there and I don’t want it to get overrun and ruined like so many of my favorite places. Shhhhhh…
Hiking to the Natural Bridge in Virginia - in the moonlight (after hours)
