The Department of Transportation claims record fines are keeping airline cancellations low
Airlines canceled just 1.6 percent of domestic flights during the first nine months of the year, a sharp drop from the 2.8 percent cancellation rate a year ago.
Why? The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), which released the figures this morning, believes it knows. The government slapped a record number of fines on U.S. airlines after last year's cancellations.
But is that the real reason?
