Iqaluit. Groceries are out of this world expensive .
We stayed at a bed and breakfast where Leonardo DiCaprio, already an environment activist, also had stayed at, because guess why? It was the only place to stay other than a very expensive hotel.
ICELAND! Before Covid even. We were flying from Warsaw back to the US in July and chose Iceland Air. They offered us a free layover so we decided on 2.5 days. We booked a one bedroom unit in Reykjavik for us and our two teen sons and rented a car. We drove a lot, all the way east to the Iceberg Lagoon and the black sand beach across the road from it. The scenery was fantastic!
My husband joked that he would have to delay his retirement by a year to pay for our 2.5 days there. A rustic, casual roadside hamburger place set us back $25 each for a basic hamburger. We carried a back pack that we filled with fruit, bread, cheese, and sausage from the grocery store.
Cheapest: Lithuania! On the same trip. Beautiful nature! A bag of groceries cost us less than $10.
Australia to my birthplace Uruguay and stopped in Argentina for several days each time bookending Uruguay. Argentina was cheap, food nice, Buenos Aires a delightful city with friendly people. (If crazy bus drivers scare you, take taxis. Buses are nuts!) While in Uruguay we visited towns in Colonia on the west coast (have family there) but first stayed in Punta del Este on Uruguay’s east. Parts of it are stunningly beautiful, the beaches pristine and suburbs lush green with beautiful European style houses, many of them so classy. The downside? It’s outrageously expensive! Food, drinks, supermarket groceries, just about everything. Took our breath away. We shared many meals because (a) they were generous portions and (b) the prices…!!
The answer to was it worth it part is… I’m glad we went although it turned out it was the week before Grand Prix so nearly everything was closed and there were barriers put up all over the town so it was difficult to even get anywhere. It was nice to see the place, but it would’ve been better to have gone during a different timeframe.
(We decided to stay in Nice instead of taking a place overnight in Monaco because of the knowledge that it’d be ridiculously expensive due to the race)

Nantucket & not worth it!
Rio de Janeiro: a bikini scrap was over $100 & a luggage lock was $65!
Probably Denmark I didn’t find Germany Holland or Portugal and Spain that expensive but it could have also been the years I travelled
The food in Alaska was very expensive but the trip as a whole was worth every cent. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Easily Monte Carlo in Monaco. Looking for a some makeup, it was going to be 85 euros for a lipstick and lip liner. Total Insanity.
New York City was most expensive!
