My family lived in Montevideo in the 1970s and we lived in Punta Carretas. Back then, the American school was on the corner of Ramón Fernandez and Bulevar Artigas, so my friends and I would walk up to Chez Piñiero for lunch every day. Did you try a chivito, a muzzarella, or some chajá while you were there? Listening to your podcast brought back some great memories.
I had to laugh when one of you commented that the fainá from Don Pepperoni at Punta Carretas Shopping tasted like prison food. Was that intentional? I’m sure you’re aware the mall used to be a prison.
From my husband Mitch - Uruguay has a National Sandwich called the Chivito. In Punta del Este, I had one on Chivito Tuesday, when restaurants discount them. Starts with a large bun, a little salad on the bun, then a quarter pound of steak, a brick of provolone cheese wrapped with ham, then wrapped with bacon, then fried egg and more salad, and the bun top. It's served with a mound of French fries. Every restaurant says they have the best chivito in Uruguay.
First time in New Zealand, tried Pavlova, their national dessert. Australia tries to claim Pavlova but New Zealand created it for the famous ballerina. Plate size meringue with scooped out center filled with vanilla custard, topped with kiwi fruit, strawberries, mango or other fresh fruit. Absolutely delicious.
My sister and I traveled through Spain on what we dubbed the Paella Tour. It was slightly different every place we went, but we loved it all. Our husbands watched with fascination, but didn’t join us. Our next trip was to Italy dubbed the Pizza Tour. Again, pizza in every city, also different but delicious. My husband chose a Tiramisu Tour instead. He also loved it all. We enjoy our themed trips even if some people may find our choices mundane.
Pad Thai was never one of my favorite dish, but eating it with my brother and his family in Chiang Mai Thailand this past December was a different story. It was delicious.
I’ll have to add second place is paella in Barcelona, with a nod to bangers and mash in Gibraltar
A visit to Bahia in Brazil led me to this famous favorite local dish Brazilian Fish Stew (Moqueca!). The broth is deep and rich, and being on the coast the fresh fish is divine!

Oh wow, small world. Chez Piñiero had very good faina, but that's all we tried there. I walked by it a few minutes ago -- I will have to go back.

I didn't know that -- but it all makes sense now!
