Hawaii- flying 3-inch roaches. The Big Thicket National Preserve in East Texas, clouds of mosquitos. North Padre Island on the Texas Gulf Coast, so many mosquitoes we didn’t dare open the car windows driving through, and they were BIG!

Egypt. The flies were awful. It was worse than India, Borneo rainforests, Okavango Delta. I practically bathed in strong insect repellent each day, even putting a tiny bit on my hair, so I wasn’t much bothered, but others in my group were swatting and waving away flies most of the time.

The U.S. Gulf Coast can be buggy, too.

Cuba in high summer, where all the flying insects were joined by many fleas on the dozens of unclaimed dogs and cats rubbing against us while we ate at the outdoor cafes. I had 60 bites one night when I counted as I rubbed on calamine lotion.

Hands down, the buggiest place we ever went was the Amazon River! Bugs the size of dinner

plates bulk up on the windows trying desperately to get to you!

Most annoying? Cedar gnats (aka noseeums) in southern Utah/northern Arizona. They’re usually only around for about 6 weeks, but if you scratch a bite, it will itch for days…weeks.

Not the biggest or probably baddest (I’ve survived MN mosquitoes) but REALLY annoying.

Tortola in late winter/early spring. At least 50 no-see-em bites btw ankles & knees. Other times of year, not so bad. Just go prepared!

Upper Peninsula, Michigan. They jokingly call the mosquito the state bird. Go in the wrong month and the black flies will ruin your trip.

RE: Your Germany trip - I spent a week in Hamburg with a tour and then ventured off on my own to do genealogy. I spent a few days in Schwerin - renting a car for the day to go to Rostock and surrounding areas. Loved the little hamlets and countryside. Not many Americans go here, sometimes language issues came up. Regarding tourists from Asia - Hallstatt Austria was very crowded with tourists from everywhere, but especially Asia. It is a small village with 800 residents and can swell to 5000 tourists daily.

Denali in July. I was taken by surprise at how many mosquitos there were there and I live in South Carolina who's state bird is the mosquito.

Buggiest? Sydney, all day! Gotta wear full head/face covering. No wonder the bats are so fat there.
