I never wanted to go to Paris. I don’t like crowds or big cities. I thought the French would snub me. To my surprise, the Parisians and everyone in France was so friendly and helpful! In fact, the French will never forget what we did for them in WWIi. In Normandy, American flags fly everywhere. I am smitten with Paris and can’t wait to go back. I love the food, culture and especially the transit system. I feel safe, unlike in America.
Singapore – with the “gum prohibition thing and the “Cannings “ , I thought that I would never go there. As it turned out, we had to go there to board a cruise. I was blown away by the airport, architecture, food and friendliness. I really enjoyed it
My partner of 42 years was sent by the Bush Administration on 4 trips to Romania for the purpose of teaching modern medical and nursing practices following the fall of Communism. The stories were bleak: the store might have 1 chicken and 3 loaves of bread. I had no desire . But for a 25th anniversary, I located and planned with a Romanian travel agent for a 33-city road trip around the country across 16 days. Outstanding beer and wine. Exceptional food. Easy language. There were discoveries and treasures around every corner, even in towns of faded glory. I found the world’s best honey in an open market at Sightu on the Ukraine border. Staying overnight in the mountaintop walled city Sighisoara, the birthplace of Vlad Tepis (aka Dracula) was such an amazing experience that it required a second visit last year.
We traveled to Belfast pre-Covid for a family reunion of sorts - she is a descendant of Quakers who lived south of Belfast. I was very surprised to drive through the rolliing hills of apple orchards around Lisburn and other small towns. We also took the train to Derry (or Londonderry) as we enjoyed Netflix’s Derry Girls. Set-jetting before it was the thing. We found a great vacation rental within the city walls and walked everywhere. On a side note, locals celebrate their mum’s birthda with an imported beer: Coors Light! Our most enjoyable part of this trip was Henry Doohan https://www.donegaltourguide.ie/private-driver-ireland/ who drove us through County Donegal to see not only the site of Star Wars filming but the family-owned Doagh Famine Village https://doaghfaminevillage.com/ We experienced the rare treat of seeing a “live” Irish wake! Sadly it is closed until late March 2025. Without the excuse of my wife’s family reunion, I’m confident that we would never thought of visiting to Belfast, much less far beyond.
My husband & I traveled to the UK in 2023 and we fell in love with Belfast! Belfast has lots of history, beautiful scenery, excellent museums including the Titanic which you could spend hours in, and some of the friendliest people on the planet with great sense of humor. We also loved visiting Giant's Causeway (day trip) and taking the Black Taxi History tour of The Troubles. Nice restaurants and bars in beautiful buildings with creative cocktails too (ie, The Bank)....helps when a friend from Belfast takes you around!
After seeing Belfast, we went back and watched Derry Girls again!
Another place we visited that we were pleasantly surprised was Glasgow. Was told to skip Glasgow but we went anyway and loved it. Similar to Belfast in that their people are so friendly and with great sense of humor.
Did not want to travel to Gothenburg, Sweden where my husband was competing in the World Masters Track and Field this summer. We fell in love with the historic, quaint city and the surrounding towns.Great visit.
