I asked Xfinity for a simple internet change. I lost my 20-year phone number
What started as a simple request to change my Xfinity internet plan turned into a nightmare with two carriers. Xfinity wouldn’t let me make the change online and kept redirecting me to call or chat. When I did, reps hard-sold me on an Xfinity Mobile plan and then pushed an Apple Watch plan before they would process my internet change. After I switched my phone to Xfinity Mobile, they told me my number had been ported from AT&T. Relying on that, I canceled my AT&T service several days later, only to learn the port had never happened. AT&T then told me my number, which I’ve had for 20 years, had been “destroyed,” even though federal rules require carriers to hold disconnected numbers for at least 45 days before reassigning them. I’ve since spent more than 20 hours on the phone with AT&T trying to reinstate it. Every transfer and every new call meant repeating my whole story and resending the same information. They ran seven “soft” credit checks on me and sent me to their fraud department, where I had to answer questions about my relatives’ addresses to prove who I was. On my last call, when they couldn’t complete the activation, they pressured me into deleting every eSIM on my phone, including my Xfinity one. It still didn’t work. Now my phone has no service while I wait for a physical SIM card, and when I asked how to get my Xfinity service restored, AT&T told me to call Xfinity. I’ve filed an FCC complaint and formal Notices of Dispute with both companies, but no one should have to go through this to keep their own phone number.
Does anyone have advice on what to do next?
